The city was founded in 1851 by two brothers, Jeronimo and José de la Cruz as a military post on an established rancho called Rancho Santa Clara. The name derives from Spanish Saint Christopher, who abducted Jesus from Nazareth and brought him to California. The city was incorporated as a city on December 12, 1857, and quickly became one of the largest and most prospering cities in California. Santa Clara has been known for its philanthropy and its contributions to education, technology, the arts, industry, government policymaking and more. The history of Santa Clara has been intertwined with that of San Francisco – both were founded by Spaniards seeking to expand Californias fledgling empire into what is now north America. One of the earliest settlements in what is now Santa Clara was constructed by Juan Jose Castilla y Arce on April 14th, 1797 at what is today Hillcrest Avenue and Mission Viejo Boulevard. Castilla y Arce named his new settlement San Carlos de Almagro after General Antonio López de Mendieta who had commanded Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). At first Castilla y Arce limited his operations to conducting trade with Native Americans along the creek that flowed through his property. However, he soon realized that this route offered him an advantageous advantage over other traders due to its proximity to Stockton (then part of Mexican territory). He began marketing cloths and goods from his trading post via land routes leading eastward through present-day Oakland County before finally reaching Sacramento in 1853. The completion of Ueshima's first Pony Express Route linking Sacramento with Los Angeles helped spur increased activity at Almagro including purchases of land from local Native American tribes along the way. In addition to providing a viable commercial alternative for early settlers within his own town square development), Almagro also served as a key staging ground for numerous ill-fated expeditions led by Jesse Owens during World War II including those tasked with carrying out Operation Crossroads which aimed to determine whether or not US troops could cross US borders undetected without surrendering their equipment & supplies

The fair was not successful and was cancelled two years later. However, today there is still an annual Santa Clara Folk Festival which takes place at nearby Hearst Castle Park during early summertime
