At this time there were only 8 people living within its borders- six residents of Palo Alto and four residents ofSanta Clara- making it one of the smallest towns in California at that time. However, during 1849–1850 an estimated 20 families movedinto what would become Silicon Valley from all around Northern California due to new gold discoveries being made in that area In 1840s there were a seriesof Earthquakes which caused extensive damage throughout Northern California; however no loss or injury occurred withinSanta Clara County until December 24th 1860 when an Earthquake which destroyed practically everything including homes and barns situated near Fort Point on San Francisco Bay took place . During this period approximately $200 million worthof goods consisting primarily of cattle and lumber had to be exported out West due to fear of another such event occurring again ..... For many years thereafter small farmers grew corn for their own consumption while timber was furnished for building purposes ...... With railroad service reaching town by 1885 local businesses/builders began constructionof high rise residences (the so called “Gothic Revival” Style) ...............During World War II General Electric built a large plant adjacent to downtown .........All told since 1800 SantaClara has experienced some 355 earthquakes including those reported here today .......... Many buildings have been replaced or rebuilt over time following natural disasters ......................Today’s skyline can be found thanks largelyto extensions constructed during last few decades along with major new development announced recently
