The largest grant at that time was 10 square miles (25 km2), making it one of the smallest U.S. counties at that time (). The name "Santa Clara" originated with Mission San Francisco de Asís (or Sankt Jakob) located in what is now Fremont (). After several changes in pronunciation due tomultiple ownership over the years (), "Santa Clara" finally arrived as an Anglo name in 1868 when a group led by Commodore John Davenport decided on it because they liked the sound (). Although founded as a farming village named Sintonia Springs near modern-day Hayward (), most growth came during World War II when various munitions plants were constructed within or near Santa Clara city limits (). For many years afterwards, downtown San Jose experienced significant gentrification which has resulted in increased pollution levels and negative economic impact on nearby neighborhoods (); however, recent redevelopment efforts have reversed some lost gains while creating new jobs ()

Fremont founded the first college in California at El Camino Real (later Stanford), which later became one of America's leading universities. A store began operating on Market Street near what is now University Avenue in 1855, and soon afterwards there were a number of businesses along Market Street including an woolen mill, blacksmith shop and wagon factory. These early days are remembered by many residents because they helped to create what is now downtown Santa Clara with its wide variety of popular cultural attractions like the nearby Arquitectonica Theatre District, Cafe Rioja and Don Quixote Theater.
