In 2000, Mayor Jorge Chavez proposed increasing restrictions on carrying handguns within city limits into the 21st century as part of a larger plan to address crime problems statewide. The proposal failed to receive significant support from either political group or business leaders. Since then, Santa Clara has made some progress toward reducing gun violence through various initiatives such as stricter penalties for convicted felons who possess firearms, more public education about firearm safety, and increased funding for law enforcement agencies that work on combating gun violence. Many important milestones occurred during these years such as World War II when General Douglas MacArthur came to town to protest Japanese military aggression; post-war redevelopment when thousands of new homes were built; and downtowns construction which included several large office buildings and a new shopping mall which continues to this day. During the 1960s through 1990s many major technological companies were headquartered within walking distance of downtown Santa Clara including Intel, Sun Microsystems, Symantec, Oracle Corporation and Apple Inc., among others. However due to suburbanization and other economic factors over time downtown business activity declined while still retaining some importance overall until recently with recent investment increasing Downtown businesses activity again The current Mayor is Republican Randy Neugebauer who took office on January 1st 2019
