Santa Clara, California is a city in the southern San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It was founded on December 25, 1849 by Spanish missionaries as part of the Vicente Loma Mission Complex. The name Santa Clara comes from an Alaskan village called Nahua K'ala which means "place where snow falls." The new town was named for General Santa Clara and his cavalry unit who fought in the Mexican-American War against Mexico. In 1851, the town became a county seat with San José as its first capital. On May 24, 1850, it was renamed to honor General Santa Clara's victory over Mexican general Joaquin de la Peña at Palo Alto Hill. The population of Santa Clara grew rapidly from 350 in 1850 to 12,000 by 1860 when it joined the newly formed United States. In 1876, a group of entrepreneurs founded what would become Hewlett-Packard Company in Palo Alto after hearing about a possible computer startup there called Analytical Centers for Physical Sciences (ACP). HP's early headquarters were located in downtownSanta Clara; however, HP later moved its main Campus to nearby Mountain View and then Menlo Park. By 1915, Silicon Valley had emerged as one of America's leading technology centers and Santa Clara became an important economic center within that ecosystem. After World War II ended and American involvement waned, downtownSantaClara declined; however, AARP began restoring Main Street (now First Street) as an attractive commercial corridor during the late 1990s/2000s period known as "The Revival".

In 1853, the first post office in Santa Clara was established. In 1897, a mail service was started and by 1907 there were four post offices in the town.
