In 1876, a group of men from Santa Clara called the "Gun Lighters" met to discuss ways to improve the safety of their community. They came up with the idea of using electric lights to help identify shooters and protect those in the area. The Gun Lighters purchased some lightbulbs and began using them in their businesses. In 1885, they became known as the "Electric Firemen." The Electric Firemen continued to use electric lights until 1935 when they transitioned to gaslights. Gaslights were more practical because they could be used in any dark environment and didn't require a fire extinguisher. They were also less expensive than electric lights. The Electric Firemen continue to be used as mascots for many local organizations and are still present today in Santa Clara County.

One of the earliest handguns was a small, two-shot muzzleloader called the Colt Pistol. The pistol was designed in 1851 by John Browning and features a revolving chamber that holds either lead or powder cartridges. It became popular with American militias and law enforcement agencies during the late 19th century. In 1875, Winchester developed the first practical shotgun, which they named the Model 1886. This shotgun featured an automatic safety system that prohibited firing until it was manually released by someone holding down a trigger group on the stock. These shotguns were very successful and saw widespread use by American hunters during the early 20th century. In 1903, Belgian gun maker Fabrique Nationale began producing pistols using designs developed by Smith & Wesson president Samuel Colt. This led to AMERICA’s most famous handgun design—the Colt revolver. The revolver is characterized by its hammer cocked and locked rearward into an exposed position on an experienced hand (the “safe” position), so that it can be fired without hitting anything else; this feature is known as “double action” or “single action” shooting. The revolver was used for both self-defense and target shooting throughout its long history. In 1911, America produced their own version of the Revolver known as the Detective model which differed from all other pistols in several ways: It had three solid rounds in each magazine instead of just two like most revolvers; also, it lacked a manual safety system like many other firearms at that time

In 1851, the small town of Santa Clara was founded by Father Miguel de la Cruz. The original mission in Santa Clara was named San Francisco de Asís after the time when Spanish missionaries visited the area and founded a small mission there. In 1853, the new Mission San José was built on what is now North Main Street, which served as the center for religious and social life in Santa Clara. In 1856, the Mexican state of Alta California was created from parts of New Spain including Santa Clara County. The county seat moved from Mexico City to Santa Clara in 1857. In 1863, Santa Clara became part of United States territory when it was acquired by California. The first post office inSanta Clara opened in 1865. The city reached its peak population growth during World War II with an estimated 50,000 residents living in downtown areas and around 10 miles (16 km) north of the city limits. However, due to economic reasons and other factors such as increased traffic caused by new highways being built at that time, the population began to decline rapidly during the war years because many people were needed in military service or were sent away to fight overseas. As part of an effort to improve public transportation within town limits, a system called “Lincoln Highway System”was established which connected major cities throughout California with smaller towns along its routes. This system resulted in an increase in tourism within town limits as visitors could see how nearly every community functioned unlike before when they had to drive between larger cities or take bus or train services. It should be noted that although downtownSanta Clara experienced significant loss during WWII due to demolition and redevelopment proposals initiated by local officials starting after World War II, much of this activity occurred outside Mendocino County so few if any legacy effects remain today outside DowntownSantaClara
The city of Santa Clara was founded in 1795 by Manuel Nieto and his wife, María José de Jesús. The city is named for Saint Clara, who is said to have been born in the town of Santo Tomas de la Cruz. The original mission church was built in 1831 and remodeled in 1853. In 1916, Santa Clara became an incorporated city. In 1968, it united with neighboring San Jose to form the current metropolitan area.
