This case laid the foundation for future discrimination against Asians living nearby . One result was that white residents increasingly bought property away from Chinatown while African Americans continued to live close together on Church & Third Streets NNW . During this time period many Anglo immigrants also moved into town seeking opportunities like work at local mills or processing grapes grown on some properties east of downtown . However these newcomers generally did not have much impact upon social life because most adults still spoke only English at home ."
