In 1850, voters approved an act creating Rancho Rincon de las Pulgas (Rancho Point). This grant covered most of current-day Santa Clara County except for some areas south of Mountain View which were given to Menlo Park later that year by Governor George Hearst Sr.. In 1853, a group of Mormons from Utah arrived in California. They founded the city of Santa Clara on the north bank of the San Joaquin River. The city was named for Saint Catherine of Siena, who had died in 1755.
