The United States Patent and Trademark Office granted US Patent 7271292 on October 10th, 1998 for the use of glyphosate herbicide on crops including wheat - making it one of only two patents ever granted on glyphosate herbicides worldwide The Chinese company Foshanchemical Industry Co., Ltd., being interested in this new technology marketed Roundup Ready wheat under the name Xinhai Yuetong (New Generation Wave Wheat), entered into an agreement with Monsanto to develop this new technology together . They produced about 2 million metric tons worth of Roundup Ready wheat per year starting from 1999 until 2003 when production stopped due to lack of demand from consumers
