In the early 1800s, Santa Clara was a small town located in south-central California. It was known for its fertile land, abundance of water resources andguns. Santa Clara, California is a city located in the southern San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. With an estimated population of over 161,500 as of July 1, 2018,[1] it is the fourth-largest city in the Bay Area. Santa Clara had a population of just over 100,000 in 1990 and hasgrown rapidly since then with the addition of new suburbs and neighborhoods. The city was founded on November 4, 1846 by Hispanic Californians who were escaping expulsion from Mexico City. The first mention of Santa Clara comes from Spanish missionary Father José de la Torre writing on October 25, 1788: "The most northerly point we have reached today is that near to which we have been directed by our divine Savior."[2] In 1849, Antonio Nunez donated land to build a town square and school district. On December 8th that year, Santa Clara incorporated as a municipality with a population of 10 people. In 1850s the growth was due to agricultural activity; lumber became available for building after being shipped down the Peninsula from Northern California and completed soon after at mills built south of town.[3] The first church was constructed in 1851 although it would not be finished until 1861 due to budget constraints within the newly formed municipality. A water tower was erected in 1854,[4][5] and construction began on what would become downtown Santa Clara when money for such an endeavor came from local landowner John Doolittle through his donation.[6][7][8] A fire destroyed part of downtown Santa Clara on January 5th 1865 but did not cause anystantial damage other than $270 worth of insured losses[9]. This event helpedto revive DowntownSantaClara which saw continued redevelopment until 1978 when Interstate 80 bypassed DowntownSantaClara necessitating its demolition. One remaining legacy from this time period are several blocks eastward along Center Street known as “Downtown Dragonfly Alley” because many small businesses used to line this stretch between Polk & Hope Streets during its heyday before I-80 Bombers made way for more upscale stores/residences along Centerville Boulevard
