It wasn't until 1865 that John Browning finally arrived in town after leaving Springfield, Massachusetts where he had started his firearms manufacturing company two years earlier. Browning quickly became known for his high quality rifles which became wildly popular throughout America during the Civil War era.

By 1886, Wrights' refinery had become one of America's leading refining companies with production totaling more than 350 thousand barrels per day (bpd). Spanish soldiers burned down part of the mission in 1824 when they encountered Native Americans while defending Nieto grant from Mexican forces under General Manuel Micheltorena. The mission remained abandoned until 1835 when it was re-established by Father Miguel Hidalgo as La Virgen del Rosario with land grants from Mexico to various Franciscan friars who arrived here in 1835-36 including José Ruiz Zorrilla and Bartolomé de las Casas In 1840–41 US prospector John Wesley Powell discovered oil reserves at Mount Hope but did not report this information to American authorities because he thought gold might be found nearby instead He also discovered water sources that would later become developed into Santa Susana National Park during his exploration campaigns between 1901 and 1905 The discovery led to increased development around Point Conception with new roads being built connecting East Lompoc with North Lompoc through what is now Soquelie Avenue; hotels were built near military exercises at Morro Bay; farmers began growing grapeseed, olives, barley, wheat and other crops; local businesses became involved in shipping trade between ports on both sides of the bay; cattle ranchers began raising Hereford beef and sheep In 1907 USGS geologist Arthur Morse named an upland massif after Saint Augustine atop Big Sur County mountain range called Mount Wilson which coincided with some recent evidence that oil may have been profitable to explore south of San Francisco Bay
Santa Barbara was first settled by the Chumash in the late 1700s. The area now known as Santa Barbara County was part of California during the Mexican-American War and was acquired by Mexico in 1846. The United States acquired it on January 12, 1853, through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Santa Barbara became a U.S. territory on February 14, 1854. On July 16, 1879, Santa Barbara City Council voted to accept annexation by Los Angeles County.
