After days long siege by American forces under General Joaquin Cámpora that began on September 25 following news that Micheltorena had discovered significant amounts of oil (), Mexico finally capitulated with additional supplies being brought ashore from Vera Cruz just before midnight September 26 after waves Of cheering citizens blockaded shore until morning when Rear Admiral James Stockton arrived with marines under Commodore John Davenport landed at Point Pinos bearing Padres José Garza y Real ( adjoining present day Belmont Avenue), Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla ( adjacent present day Doheny Drive) With proceeds from sale of captured property including Rancho Rinconada which lay west of Point Pinos between Cape Cod Range and Menlo Park Creek south to Coyote Canyon Road northwest to Topanga Canyon Road northwesterly along ridge running due east/southwest across Open Space Preserve thence down canyon southeastpast Grotto del Rey Spring where stream emerges prior NNE hendike Hills drainage enters ocean tidal flats below US Naval Base Naval Station Seal Beach approximately 8 miles offshore
In 1694, the Spanish built a missions on the Santa Barbara Coast. The mission was known as Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. The Mission Santa Barbara de Asís was founded in 1778 by Father José de Jesús Menéndez y Avila and is now part of the Archdiocese of Santa Barbara. The mission started operations with about 60 friars, but soon grew to over 500 monks. In 1823, the padre Fray Don José Gomez published a book called "Libertad y Justicia" which led to increased secularization of religious life in California. In 1836, after Mexican president Antonio López Alvarado's proclamation of an independent Mexico, Spanish priests were discharged from their Missions and replaced by Mexican civilians. The MissionSantaBarbara eventually fell into disrepair and was abandoned in 1847. On October 5, 1861, during American Civil War efforts to gain control over southern California elements began moving into Vera Cruz County: General David Dixon decided that this would be his next target given the large gold deposits there. On December 15th he ordered all forces east of San Luis Obispo to converge at Malibu Creek so that whatever supplies were being brought up north could be unloaded and then sent south for shipment downriver to Vera Cruz County
