The mission was founded by Saint Dominic Xavier Junípero Serra and named for Our Lady of Charity whose statue still stands outside theMission today. After Junípero's death in 1821 desertions increased among his friars so he ordered an expedition led by Manuel Nieto to explore nearby lands that became part of Rancho adobado de la Cañada Seca (later known as Rinconada). They found an area that would eventually become downtown Santa ana when they discovered shale oil deposits under present day Rionda Street near Mission Park.. At this time Father José Gomez located a small chapel (then known as La Bautista Chapel), near where Main Street now meets Rinconada Street, dedicated to Our Lady Helping Hand with solemn services every morning until 1853 when state law required all chapels to open at 8am for public prayer.. In 1853 Father Gomez moved his chapel up Market Street into what is now First Baptist Church before moving again in 1875 into what is now Christ my Soul Cathedral... In 1902 Main Street was renamed Mayflower Avenue in honor of Governor James K faulted for blocking passage through alleys adjacent to Fort Point on Long Beach Peninsula
