Mexican Governor Piarista claimed ownership over this area despite no proof and shortly thereafter built an adobe mission known as Nuestra Señora de Loreto del Carmelo (Our Lady Of Loreto) just east of downtown Santa Ana which served as a remote outpost until 1862 when it became the first post office west of the Rockies "Loreto" later became "Santa Ana" and continued serving as the primary town center until 1886 when voters passed a resolution supporting incorporation into the new city In 1885 Manuel Nieto founded what would become known as "Nuestra Señora de la Assunta", also called "El Nuevo Santiaño". In 1913 El Nuevo Santiaño merged with another Missions Church two blocks away to form Iglesia católica en el Centro (Church At The Center) which remains today one of downtown Santa ana’s most popular tourist attractions

After days of skirmishing near present day Glendora Avenue and Beaumont Street Streets between Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Pico Boulevard south of Third Street intersection; Castro withdrew his force only after being forced into disarray by numerically superior Mexican forces who burned some homes as well as capturing two cannons before withdrawing back across Angeles Creek towards Yorba Linda via Antelope Road Bridge over Angeles Creek/Beaumont Street Streets.) On December 5th 1850 General Nunez discovered that though Mexican troops had been destroyed at Los Angeles there were still about 20 thousand soldiers remaining under Colón’s command scattered throughout Southern California; accordingly he ordered General Adrián Ramírez himself to march forthwith against these remaining Mexican troops instead of detaching units for an attack on Carson City.). Santa Ana grew rapidly in its early years as a result of its location and access to water resources. Andrés María Pico called the area "Mira del Rio" because of the turquoise-colored waters that surrounded it. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and Santa Ana became part of Mexican territory. In 1848, Santa Ana seceded from Mexican Territory and joined United States of America. On March 14, 1850, Congress passed a bill creating the California Territorial Legislature which would manage Santa Ana's affairs. The first territorial governor was George Pearce who served until May 3, 1851 when he was replaced by James Hahnemann. On October 10, 1861 Californios under General Antonio Lopez Tejada attacked Ulysses S Grant's army at Palo Alto Creek outside present day Los Angeles County in what is known as the Alhambra Massacre. One hundred and thirty-six Californios were killed including many women and children while seventy-three Americans were captured or wounded including General Grant himself
