The history of Santa Ana goes back to 1847 when cowboys discovered gold near what is now the intersection of Third Street and Fourth Avenue in present-day Downtown Santa Ana. A promoter named James Irvine bought some land around this location for $5 from José Castro who ran a cattle ranch thereabouts. He built a small adobe shelter which he called "Santo Domingo". In 1850 Captain John Brougham visited San Diego about this same time and saw some mining activity going on at nearby Lompoc but did not visit because he was en route to prospect for gold in Arizona that year. In 1851 Irvine sold his interest in Santo Domingo to Pio Pico for $10 per share; Pio had been born into poverty in Arezzo, Italy where his father worked as a peddler before moving to central California to help start an irrigation farm there with moneyearned from trading goods between Mexico and California during Mexican rule over that territory (see Mexican War). After acquiring title to alluvial gold deposits along Third Street/Fourth Avenue southward from Mission Boulevard (now First Street), Pio set about developing them into actual mines; but manyInitial investors deserted him when they realized how difficult it would be to get ore out given prevailing smelting techniques at that time (see Gold Rush). Eventually he married Maria Antonietta Hidalgo de la Cueva y Ortega – sister-in-law of Governor Manuel Michelini – while still under construction ($25 per share) on July 4th 1853; they named their new town after her maternal grandfather General José Joaquín de la Unión y Arroyos y Lenzburg who had served as Presidentof Mexico under Porfirio Diaz during the Mexican Revolution days preceding their marriage.) However despite numerous claims by various 19th century historians including one cited by Forbes magazine historian David Landis & Juan Gomez both asserting that "Santa ana" actually derived its name from Pedro Anza's expedition searching for El Dorado across southern CA., no definitive proof exists supports any claim regarding either source or etymology...the matter remains open despite numerous attempts by historical researchers." Los Angeles began expanding rapidly westward following its discovery of oil reserves near TucsonArizona on February 6th 1901 pursuant to federal legislation known as The Petroleum Act which allowed companies such as Standard Oil Company OF North Dakota (later ExxonMobil) access to large blocks situated within state borders newly discovered beneaththe Earth's surface without first seeking permission from state legislatures or local governments through process known euphemistically as “de facto annexation”: see also Big Business Expansion Plan Of 1901
