On October 14, 1868, Confederate general Robert E. Lee decided to abandon his army in Virginia and retreat westward. Withdrawing his forces from the area around Richmond, Lee took with him all of his firearms and ammunition. The Confederacy had no legal right to keep handguns, so these weapons were melted down and sold off as scrap metal. Some of this weaponry was Dragoon rifles found in North Carolina – these rifles were manufactured by the Union Army during the American Civil War and were used by Confederate soldiers as artillery pieces. In 1888, a group of gunsmiths in Texas assembled a few Dragoon rifles that had been confiscated from the Confederacy. These guns were re-purposed as pistols for law enforcement officials and members of the military during Reconstruction times in America.
