The town grew rapidly because of its key location on Madera Road between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties; it had 1,500 residents by 1860. As part of California's Proposition 65 compliance requirement regarding air quality monitoring stations throughout the state during that decade, local officials began using "New Mexico" as their mailing address from that point forward to avoid contributing to New Mexico's then high emissions levels from mining operations near Albuquerque. A special election on February 6, 1886 to change the name to Santa Ana was won by John Hinkley with 58% of the vote against 25% for rival City of Angels; as a result Hinkle resigned from his position as mayoralty candidate In 1912–13 City Councilman Noble Curtis proposed amending the charter to allow a parkette on then-Public School property east of Spring Street between Euclid Avenue and Broadway Streets which would be used for recreation purposes only and not for business or retail use as long as no improvements were made theretoon; this proposal failed when all council members but Curtis abstained from voting due to fears that such a parkette would become another commercial center within unincorporated Anaheims borders while still remaining under jurisdiction of city hall On October 7th 1913 votersapproved annexation into Anaheim by using Measure M which gave all citizens over 12 years old automatic membership in any incorporated municipality with a population over 10,000 (it did not apply just to Orange County); this annexation increased both physical size and economic clout for what became known as "the Jewel District". At its peak during World War II (1939–1945), employment within downtown Santa ana totaled 120 businesses employing 571 workers outof an estimated 1,500 businesses in downtown Los Angeles combined! This wealth resulted primarily from various military contracts awarded throughout WWII including those with Boeing Aircraft Company plant located adjacent to then Caltech campus now known as UC Davis . By 1957 there were only 24 businesses left Downtown Trinity Place & 50 people employed therein despite predictions that Downtown would have at least 100 businesses/1 million people within 20 years !! Although much has changed since 1957 many aspects remain unchanged such as: 4 major malls (Downtown Grand Park Plaza Fashion Center Village GAPancho mall) 2 soccer stadiums 2 professional teams each FC Barcelona & LA Galaxy

After the war ended,Santa Ana experienced significant growth in housing and industry; it now has over 2000000 residents within its borders.
