Santa Ana is a city in southern California. It was founded in 1857 by fifty-seven prospectors who named it after Saint Anthony of Padua, the patron saint of travelers and traders. Santa Ana became an incorporated town on December 6, 1870. The city's population was 113,638 at the 2010 census. Santa Ana is located on the San Gabriel Valley east of downtown Los Angeles and north of Pasadena. The first Europeans to come to what is now Santa Ana were Missionaries Juan Crespo and Antonio López de Mendoza on November 5, 1769. In 1853, General Mariano Obregon transferred ownership of Alta California to Mexico for $20,000 and land grants began to be granted in small parcels to Anglo settlers. A group led by John Sutter arrived in 1847 and started ranching nearpresent-day Anaheim Hills. On February 14, 1850 he donated 7800 acres (28 km²) of land south of Anaheim for a new mission town called Nuestra Señora del Rosario Conventual de Nuestra Señora Del Carmen y las Nieves (Our Lady of Carmen and Lazarus convent). On October 15th 1855 two surveyors from the Ulysses S Grant Land Company arrived in what is now Santa Ana with plans to build a road from Rancho Niguel through Sylmar and then downriver along present day Orange Boulevard into Tucson before continuing northwest along present day Ventura Boulevard into Pasadena; this route would have connected up with Mexican routes coming down the Central Valley Viaima Pass near today's Simi Valley. The grantees failed to realize that they had given away more than just land when they signed the deed; their name still appears on maps as "Ulysses S Grant & Co." After some backtracking they decided on naming their new settlement after Saint Anthony because it sounded like something good might happen there such as finding gold or being blessed with miraculous powers by God himself! The first post office opened in Santa Ana on January 1st 1860 under the name "El Pueblo de los Anglos". It served southern part of Los Angeles County until 1903 when it moved to Chula Vista due east across Temple Street from downtown Los Angeles proper; during its time it handled mail from all over Southern California including parts of Orange County as well as Riverside County outside LA county boundaries. In 1862 an act known as Constitutional Amendment No 23 created limits upon presidential patronage which eventually led to increased political power within state government for most Angelenos including Govs James Buchanan (D), Manuel Miranda (D), Edwin Meese I (R) & Dianne Feinstein D-Calif.) After years experiencing poverty due largely to plantation labor mismanagement by their railroads brothers Lorenzo Dowell & Wm Hutton organized what became known as Father Dowell's Sons Railway company providing transportation services between cities throughout Southern California starting out with San Bernardino then going north through Sacramentoina De Anza foothills finally reaching downtown LA via surface streets ending up opposite City Hall Park where passengers disembarked at 12th Street Station before being taken city wide aboard trains running via Union Pacific Railroad right past Will Rogers World Headquarters northeast towards Las Vegas
