On December 11th 1861 a group of men led by Captain John Biddle built what is today City Hall on First Street between Second and Third Streets in what is now downtown Santa ana. This building served as the first public meeting place for Santa ana citizens until it burned down in 1865. The current City Hall building replaced an earlier structure which also served as a public square before burning down in 1865. In 1870 Christopher Skelton organized local fire companies to fight wildfires that had started across Northern California spread by shipwreck survivors groups fleeing San Francisco during the Gold Rush period (1849-50). These crews were called "Skelton's Men" after their leader Christopher Skelton who fought several fires with these teams while living near Sacramento in Northern California during this time frame; he may have been inspired by his friend Captains George Fenton and William Richardson who both fought fires while living near Modesto during this same time frame

Today, Santa Ana is a thriving community with a population of over 270,000 people who live in more than 100 neighborhoods.
