After passage of Proposition 13 (the adult day care referendum) in 1978, many small businesses closed up shop with no hope of revival; however, a few local entrepreneurs decided to try new business models such as online sales and e-commerce instead which have led to continued growth over the past few decades since then. In 1821, when Californios south ofonao took over what had been part of Mexico City Province, they changed the name to Santa Ana because Diego Rivera had presided over their celebration there while living in Mexico City. The coming of the railroad to Santa Ana did not cause immediate growth like those around it; instead it served as a delay until other communities could be developed. Whenowntown Santa Ana opened in 1887 it was only modestly populated with a few stores and three hotels. However within 10 years downtown had become America's largest shopping district with more than 100 stores including 50 department stores and 30 specialty stores In 1912 construction began on Anaheim Stadium which would serve as home field for both Southern California Angels baseball teams (now known as the Dodgers) and also serve as a centerpiece for Christmas tree lighting ceremonies every year starting in 1933. Completed just two years before World War I started, Anaheim Stadium became an important symbol of post-war Americana Thanks to its hosting of such events it helped make Anaheim into one of Northern California's most prominent cities In 1954 Disneyland opened its doors making Disneyland Park one of four theme park destinations nationwide along with Universal Studios Hollywood (now Islands Of Adventure), MGM Studios (now Orlando), and Busch Gardens parks all operated by Walt Disney Company
The Santa Ana River was first known to the ancient Linguists as Ttacna. The river's name is of course derived from Spanish "Santa Ana" which means "holy one." The region that now includes Orange County was part of Mexico until 1821 when it became part of the United States of America. In 1848, following Mexican statehood, Santa Ana County was created from a portion of San Bernardino County. Mexican land grants were given to Anglo American settlers and in 1850, Sir George Richards explicitly granted what is now Orange County its charter as a county on the basis that it would be an English speaking county in California. The city of Santa Ana was founded by mistake in 1856 when Governor Elihu Bancroft designated Fillmore Street as the town's main street because he thought Fillmore had been elected President of the United States.
