They named their new settlement Antelope Valley after General Antonio Luna's division of Mexican troops who were searching for an outlet into California during the Mexican–American War. Gold Fever had already arrived in Northern California by this time so no one realized what they were doing when they named their town after an event that happened a century earlier than they did. Becausemoderately accurate records do not survive from this era there can be no absolute proof that "Antelope Valley" actually existed or even that anyone called it such until long after many people hereabouts had moved on or died off." The first post office opened at what is now known as First Avenue and Seventh Street on November 1, 1851 under the name Nuestra Señora de la Luz (Our Lady of Light). At first there were only six residents in this small outpost; three men - Jens Nielsen, Ole Kirk Christiansen, and Johan Svendsen - ran the business while another three men sharedcropped some crops: Wessel Hesselmandt leased land northeast of downtown where he built his house today; Danish immigrant Rasmus Jensen farmed property east of town near present day Springbrook Drive; Gustave Gratz operated a smelter on Rancho Pinole before purchasing title to it from Felix Chavez in 1860; Anton Grundy bought land adjacent to present day Northeast Eighth Street between Alameda Boulevard and Pacific Boulevard in 1865." A second post office opened at 7th and Vine Streets on December 12, 1851 under the name Santiago del Norte (Stationship North) because all mail passing through Los Angeles went through Santiago then downriver to Jericho before arriving at Los Angeles via filibuster Juan Bautista Moreno with route #5B prior to US Route 66 access opening up along I-10 about mile east ofpresent day Santee Alley intersection". After American Civil War ended hostilities between America's Northern Confederacy & Mexico's Southern Republic several more buildings were constructed here such as St John's Methodist Episcopal Church 1870-1871; Masonic Lodge No 1 1872-75 & 1886-92 according to oral history booklets compiled by staff members later published as History Of The City Of Santa ana Volume 2 1947 thru 1978 pp 94 thru 111 pages 100 thru 106 pg 102 Building number 6 also became home to African American Artisania Theatre 1930’s
