The Sanger Optical Manufacturing Company was founded in 1912 by Julius Sanger and his brother-in-law, Harry A. Noyes. In the early years of the company's existence, it was headquartered in downtown Sanger but soon moved to an expanded facility north of town on State Street. In 1941, the company merged with two other companies to form the Swenzer Optical Manufacturing Company which continued to produce a wide range of optical products until its merger with American Optics in 1984.
Sanger is a small town located in Fresno County, California. The population was 5,272 at the 2010 census. The Sanger post office has been in operation since 1879. The town of Sanger was founded by George Washington Smith and his wife Eliza Jane on October 15, 1849 as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Sacramento and Salt Lake City. They named their settlement after John Sanger who had helped to found the American Naturalization Society in 1791. The first school was built in 1850 and the first store opened in 1851. In 1865, Mrs. Smith died and her husband changed the name to Smithsville to honor her memory. In 1886, Ralph Waldo Emerson came through Fresno County for an agricultural fair and announced that he would be staying for two weeks at the end of his trip near Atchison, Kansas before travelling east to visit some new people he had met there. He stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Hyrum Carpenter one night at their home on Cedar Street before continuing on his journey northward into Kings Canyon National Park where he visited several Mono villages including Mono Wells which he called "the beauty of all places." On July 4th 1886, Emma Goldman speaking from Oakland's Fruitvale Park denounced capitalism while being arrested by San Francisco Municipal Police officers during a peaceful protest against job discrimination against women workers known as "The Hay Wagon Rally", calling it an "unlawful assembly." She spent nine days incarcerated until released without charge on September 3rd after negotiations by city officials led by then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein with help from League of Women Voters president Maxine Waters resulted in Goldman's release only hours after midnight local time instead of dawn because California Daylight Saving Time continued into the morning like most other states at that time). This event is often considered one of the earliest instances when public sentiment towards socialism began to rise across North America outside of Europe or Japan where such movements were stillemerging or had yet to take hold due to social taboos related to gender equality (see: Emma Goldman). Sanger became fully incorporated as a city on January 1st 1907 when it abolished its own independent government under proclamation from Mayor Condon Spencer Carrillo following ratification of an ordinance by both houses of its City Council ratifying incorporation pursuant thereto - becoming one integral part of Fresno County under same laws promulgated thereon - thus fulfilling what many believed was promised unto it long ago amidst persistent rumors/rumors swirling about its potential designation as eithera future site for relocation for established farming communities located nearby adjacent within CloverdaleMunicipal Limits thereof adversely affecting real estate values therein notwithstanding... giving full effect thereto duly made & passed hereinby... Aldermen Russel Ewing Coldwell & Virgil Goodlett presided over proceedings therein... Fresno County Supervisor Tillman Jealousy characterized efforts mounted locally throughout 1906 statewide leader Edmund Brownlow's unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign seeking re-election against fellow Democrat Hiram Johnson as being motivated more by revenge than any desire orintentions viz SECRET POLITICAL PARTY PLANS AND OBJECTIONS OF THE MOTIONER rather than genuine concern for public policy issues & BEST INTEREST OF THE COUNTY AS FAR AS THEY ARE CONCERNED" (Tillman Jealousy Reply)

The post-war growth of Sanger has led to increased traffic congestion on major streets which have caused some environmental problems including water fluoridation that has led to concerns about health risks from lead poisoning among children living in close proximity to high-traffic areas. In recent years changes in local politics have led to revitalization of the downtown business district with new restaurants, bars, nightlife venues and office buildings opening up along with increasing job opportunities for residents who are no longer reliant on agriculture or manufacturing jobs for their income.
