Some of the first people to shoot guns in Sanger were the Mormons who used them to hunt game. In 1868, Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer and his unit were retreating from a battle with the Sioux and they took some cartridges from a Mormon scout as they retreated. The cartridge left behind was taken by locals and discovered by Captain John Winthrop Robinson, who decided to use it against the Indians. In 1875, Thomas Nuttall got his first gun when he bought one from a man selling deer rifles at Fort Hall. That year saw the start of California's Gold Rush which led to an increase in gun traffic. By 1880, there were more than 200 stores selling guns in Sanger. Gunfights between miners and Native Americans are also recorded during this time period. In 1892, local contractor John Leland built a shop on what is now Center Street near where Main Street meets Sacramento Avenue for manufacturing firearms including shotgun shells, handguns, revolvers and rifles. This shop became known as Leland's Arsenal after John Leland himself. It was here that many famous outlaws such as Wyatt Earp or Doc Holliday acquired their start in life- such as James Earp being trained at Leland's gunsmith academy before becoming an outlaw themselves
Sanger is a small town in Kern County, California. It is located on the banks of the Sanges River, about 12 miles northwest of Bakersfield and about 18 miles north of Los Angeles. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. The name "Sanger" ( pronounced asSAH-nuh) comes from the Shoshone word sahgah (meaning "river"). The first settler in what is now Sanger was George H. Smith in 1873. He built a cabin on an east bank of the river near present-day Junction City. The town site was surveyed by Captain John C. Fremont in 1879 and named after him because he had so generously donated land for its establishment. In 1907, Sanger established itself as an agricultural center with a cottonseed oil refinery and two foundries producing cannons and other firearms that became known throughout Southern California as Sangers Firearms Company. In 1916, it also began to produce radios and TV sets under the name Western Electric Radio Corporation before becoming NBCUniversal Television Corporation in 1954. As one of Northern California's last isolated communities, Sanger developed strong ties with nearby Bakersfield and Kern County before both counties merged into State University District #1 in 1959 which included much of what is now Kern County proper

Sanger, California is located in the Mojave Desert and has been inhabited for over 10,000 years. In 1866, the city of Sanger was founded by George C. Marshall and other pioneers who were looking for a new home for their families after leaving the Gold Rush in California. The city was named after Sanger Creek which runs through the area. The first Europeans to visit Sanger were Spanish traders who set up trading posts along the creek in 1822. English explorer John C. Frémont also visited Sanger during this time and reported on its beauty and potential as a cattle ranching town. In 1870, Gustave Courbet discovered gold near what is now Sanger City Limits and decided to establish a claim to it. He hired guides and miners to find gold but all failed to find any significant amounts of ore. However, he did find some small amounts of silver at nearby Anza Springs which he used as part of his marketing campaign for his discovery. In 1872, Mormon settlers from Utah arrived in Sangers with their new found land grants and began construction on what would become Salt Lake City. They started by building a stockade around what is now downtown Sangers before moving onto more extensive development that included founding schools, church buildings, hospitals, farms etcetera. The end result was an immense influx of people and businesses into the small town which quickly became known as one of Northern California’s most influential communities during its early days. In 1904-1905, Mayor Burton Wicker built the first municipally owned water system in Northern California when he purchased 8 miles of underground pipe from Southern Pacific Railroad Company officials in order to provide drinking water for residents throughout San Francisco Bay Area including San Jose (then part of Oakland). This important event helped bring about increased development around Sangers while also helping improve public sanitation services which are still vital today (see below). In addition to Water System Development #1, Mayor Wicker also spearheaded various initiatives such as Streetscape improvements that have helped keep downtown cleanliness high profile since then; these include: creating Airstream Trailer Parking Structure at South Main Street & Lakeshore Drive; installation of stormwater management systems within many business districts including Market Square Shopping Center; streetlighting throughout Downtown; designing an alleyway between First Street & Cedar Avenue called “The Alley” that provides attractive retail foot traffic circulation; enlarging sidewalks throughout Downtown streetscape areas; pedestrian lighting on several blocks near First Street & Cedar Avenue
Sanger was founded in 1873 by John Sanger, who named the town after himself. The first post office at Sanger was established in 1875. In 1908, the Sangers bought 160 acres of land east of their original farm and built a new home. They continue to live there today.
