In 1856, Sanger was founded by Mormon settlers who brought over large numbers of rifles and shotguns from Nauvoo, Illinois. The Mormons soon realized that they could not rely on their firearms to protect them from Indians, so they began using gun slings as an effective weapon against these attackers. Since these devices carried no Firearms ammunition, it was necessary for the wielder to provide his own supply. This often meant either fishing or collecting mossy oakum (a type of gum) which would be placed in a sling and then wrapped around his armature in order to hold onto it while he fired his rifle or shotgun. The Mossy Oakum would slow down the projectile as it traveled through the air and thereby deprive an Indian of an easy target to hit. The use of gun slings also became popular among farmers due to their ease of transportation and ability to fire multiple rounds per minute at close range without having reloads required

The first settler in what would become Sanger was George Witherspoon who came to live near what is now Main Street on December 1st 1797. Witherspoon started a sawmill which he built on his farm that still stands today along with two other businesses - a grocery store known as Witherspoon's Store (now closed) and one known as Hogg's Post Office (closed). In 1800 John Noyes moved from Connecticut to start a rancho called Rancho San Juan de los Reyes about 12 miles east of where Sangers current road meets into Mexico Municipality. Here he raised cattle and later sold them off to US ranchers such as Daniel Boone who also traded goods with Mexican traders across the border including Santa Fe Trail leader Manuel Armijo In 1827 Johann Strauss II acquired Mexican land just south of present day Sangers center when he bought Rancho Los Nietos from Andrés de Olivas y Pacheco during Alta California's First period of development. This area would come under English control following Mexico's signing of the Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 14th 1848 after General Bernhard Miles' march through Veracruz Desert triumphantly claimed all Mexican territory north of Baja California Peninsula including Rancho Los Nietos extending upriver past present day Soquel until it reached its junction with ranchos granteed by Governor José Joaquín de Herrera northwestward beyond Ventura County’s limits It should be noted that there were no towns or villages existing within modern-day Sanger boundaries prior to Spanish contact although initial Explorations/ Settlements took place within & immediately adjacentTo what are now our Streets & Buildings (& Old Town Hall), specifically On Orchard Creek Rd Where(?) Sanger, California was founded on December 12, 1879 by George Sanger and his wife Nellie. The town was named for General John C. Fremont because of the discovery of gold in the area. The early years were difficult for Sanger as he battled against numerous challenges from developers and others who wanted to claim the goldfields around his town. However, Sanger persevered and in 1893 he formed a company with other investors called Northern Pacific Railway Company to travel upriver to find new sources of gold. On July 27, 1897 Northern Pacific Railroad reached Sangers location and announced that they had found a new gold field at Goldfield creek. This news created great excitement inSanger and throughout California as it demonstrated that there was indeed potential for wealth in this area. In 1904, after more than fifty years of hard work, George Sanger received an honorable retirement from Northern Pacific Railroad Company due to his dedication to finding new goldfields in the region. He remains one of America’s most successful geologists and has been honored numerous times with awards such as the Congressional Gold Medal (1976).
