Ammunition history in Sanger, California began with the development of firearms within the area by farmers and ranchers. In 1879, George W. Steenler developed a rifle using black powder that became known as the "Steenler Rifle." That year, he and his brother erected a small factory near Sanger to produce rifles and ammunition. In 1886, Samuel Winchester founded Winchester Repeating Arms Company in reaction to Steenler's initiative. Winchester produced its first gun, the Model 1887 Rifle, in 1887. The company was renamed Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1897 after its founder's death. By 1899, Winchester had become one of America’s leading arms manufacturers with sales totaling $2 billion. Ammunition production at Winchesters increased rapidly during World War I due to wartime demand for munitions by both the U.S. military and industry itself. In 1915-1916, American munitions companies produced more than 1 million rounds of ammunition per day for use in World War I; this number increased to 3 million rounds by 1918-1919 when new technology led to an increase in range accuracy and lethality with artillery fire (see "Winchester Ammunition"). After World War I ended, interest in firearms faded as commercial interests grew stronger such as automobiles and other appliances (see "Winchester Ammunition Production"). However, some aspects of firearm manufacturing continued until the early 21st century including Ruger Firearms Manufacturing Inc., which produces semiautomatic pistols under contract from Glock AG; Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation manufactures revolvers under license from Colt Armament Corporation; Remington Arms Company manufactures shotguns under contract from Mossberg & Sons Inc.; Sturm Ruger & Co.,Inc produces rifles under contract from Sig Sauer AG; Browning Machineguns Manufacturing Incorporated manufactures machine guns under contract from Heckler & Koch GmbH).

They began producing flour and feed for local farms before expanding production to cottonseed oil in 1916. Today, most notable landmarks in downtown Sanger include the Clarence Gault House Museum,[4] which preserves evidence from pioneer days such as Ohlone hunter-gatherer burials found nearby;[5] Andrus Clothing & Shoes Company building still standing;[6] First Baptist Church built 1914;[7] Kapp Furniture store built 1915;[8][9][10][11][12][13]; Western Growers Market building constructed 1915-16;[14][15],[16]; [17]) and Post Office Building constructed 1917.[18]. In 1927, J.D. Power & Co., publishers of Popular Mechanics magazine started publishing magazines here including Automobiles and Trucks which continues today under different names like Powells Magazine Incorporated or simply Powells Publishers Incorporated (PMI).[19]: pgs 9-10 On July 10th 1920 full name changed to “SANGER CALIFORNIA INC” according to US Census records
