San Ramon is a small town in San Mateo County, California. It was founded in 1853 as a boomtown after the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill. The population was 397 in 1850, but it grew to over 1,000 by 1860. The town became an agricultural center with extensive vineyards and orchards. By 1870, the town had lost its economic significance and was largely destroyed by a fire that burned for three days. In 1902, San Ramon merged with nearby Redwood City to form the city of Redwood City-San Ramon. The history of San Ramon begins with the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill on December 24, 1848 by James Hutton and his partners John Sutter and George Miller. The men started what would become one of America's most successful gold Rush operations, finding more than 2 million ounces (109 kg) of gold over two years at the mill site. Goldmining continued until 1865 when production stopped due to new discoveries in Nevada and Arizona. However, despite this setback, San Francisco promoter Addison Fuller began efforts to revive mining interests in 1868 when he organized a group called the "Gold Association". This effort resulted in the erection of several mills on various hills near downtown San Francisco for extracting runoff water from mines below ground so that coins could be melted down and cast into new bars or medals. mining resumed again during Reconstruction in 1872 but only marginally due to low grades resulting from exhaustion of supplies brought overland from prospectors across Nevada.[1][2] A series of destructive fires broke out throughout Northern California during 1875-6 which destroyed some 10%+of all buildings within twenty miles (32 km) around Sacramento because Volunteer Fire Department crews were unable to extinguish blazes quickly enough using traditional methods such as hoses pulled up through broken windows;[3][4] one estimate puts this figure at 50%.[5] In 1880s local farmers began growing grapes for wine production; however viticulture did not take off until much later given good soils and irrigation systems available nearby; today’s produce includes many types including red wine (Rohit), white wine (Chardonnay), sparkling wines (Cassis), Sauvignon Blanc/Syrah/Zinfandel/Pinot Noir rothschilde etc.;[6][7] important locally produced wines are Mission Viejo dry white table wine [8], Barbera d'Asti DOC Alto “Piedra Pintada” Sparkling Wines [9], Mendocino Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 [10], Russian River Valley Shiraz 2010 [11].
