In 1901, when Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) started servingOakland and other parts of Northern California, SanRamon became an important transportation hub for BART passengers traveling between downtown Oakland and Berkeley or Fremont or anywhere else in BART's service area. San Ramon also saw significant growth during World War II as a center for munitions production at General Dynamics Plant No. 4 south of town; later that plant became one of the main suppliers to Japan during World War II.
