The first European to set foot on what is now San Ramon, California was Juan Bautista de Anza in 1802. The area that would become San Ramon and parts of Martinez, El Sobrante and Hacienda Heights were part of Spanish missions administered by the Franciscans. In 1821, Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in what is now downtown San Ramon. The following year, Rancho Rinconada was granted to José Maria Osorio y Costilla. In 1835, rancho Rinconada was sold to Manuel Nieto and Carlos Nieto. In 1850, a group of American miners named John Wesley Powell discovered gold near modern-day Hacienda Heights. This led to the discovery of other regions rich in gold and silver potential such as the East Bay region today which became known as the “Gold Rush” era due to its prolific mining fields at that time. By 1860, over 90 percent of all land within present-day San Ramon had been conquered by Anglo settlers seeking mineral rights or for agriculture purposes primarily ranching operations with a population estimated at 2,500 people living scattered throughout rural areas east of Interstate 680 between Martinez and Daly City along with an additional 600 residents within downtownSan Ramon which included most of what is today downtownSan Ramon
