San Ramon is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 96,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first peoples to live in what is now San Ramon were the Ohlone people who arrived during the Algonquian period. In 1846, Don Jose de la Cruz founded Rancho del Monte Honda with land he owned on Mission Bay. The town site was chosen because it had good water and soil resources. A post office called Tomales was established in 1851, and the name of the town changed to San Ramon in 1865 when it became part of Contra Costa County. A sawmill built in 1867 became one of the largest employers in town and helped support growth throughout its early years. By 1890, most of Northern California's lumber production had reached San Ramon; however, heavy industry failed to take hold here until after World War II when new factories opened up around the county seat of Richmond (now East Richmond). In 1941 a group led by John Dorn prepared for war by buying all but 10 percent of Jardine & Matheson's assets within Contra Costa County and moving production back to their original facility at Orinda outside Oakland so that they could be self-sufficient within three months should hostilities erupt abroad. After humble beginnings as a small ammunition factory producing only rounds for artillery fire testing, Jardine & Matheson grew rapidly into one of America's leading transportation companies with interests extending beyond munitions manufacturing into such diverse fields as engineering services and real estate development. They were later acquired by The American Tobacco Company which merged with British American Tobacco plc., creating British American Plc., one of the world's foremost tobacco companies.
