It is the second most populous city in San Mateo County and the 15th most populous city in California. The bulk of its economy is based on services such as education, research, technology, and professional services. The City of San Ramon's industrial base has disappeared but portions remain involved in engineering and manufacturing endeavors. Some of these businesses are now headquartered elsewhere in Northern California or nationally. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Ramon were Spanish missionaries who founded Mission San Francisco de Asís (1797) on land that would later become part of Rancho Santa Cruz y Salinas (1836). Rancho Santa Cruz y Salinas was granted to José Joaquin Mora y Crespí by Manuel Nieto on October 5, 1839. Miguel Silva purchased parts of it from Mora y Crespí in 1848. In 1853 the western half of Rancho Rinconada was acquired by John Sutter from his brother-in-law Josiah Cranch for $10,000 cash price plus 10% interest per year until paid off. In 1865 he sold it to George Hearst for $2 million after gaining control over much of northern Californias wine industry through acquisitions throughout the 1850s including those here at Rinconada Valley vineyards near today's town center known as Hearst Valley Hearst soon developed other interests within this large valley including water rights for his new valley and construction on its eastern flank atop Mather Mountain which would eventually become downtown Los Angeles beyond today's boundaries He also became one owner/operatorof what would be known as "the white elephant" - Kings Canyon Railroad - which ran between Sacramento and Lodi upriver before terminating at Amherst; then proceeded downriver past Napa into Sonoma County where it terminated just north of Yountville Kings Canyon Railway operations ceased around 1915 when railroads were eliminated during World War I due to fuel shortages caused by munitions production going up at nearby munitions plants . Passenger service resumed about 20 years later when Amtrak began running passenger trains between Livermore & Eureka Springs ..... Passenger service stopped again around 1990 following Amtrak's abandonment of original routing thru downtown LA along Decatur Street rather than via Madera Avenue

San Ramon, California is a small town located on the San Francisco Peninsula in Northern California. The town was founded in 1887 by John W. Dixon as a railway stop on the Santa Clara River. In 1919, San Ramon became an incorporated city and has remained that way ever since. The economy of the town is dominated by agriculture and ranching, with many of the businesses concentrated around the large animal husbandry business. 2 percent of San Ramon's population is made up of immigrants from other countries, making it one of the most diverse towns in Northern California. The majority of residents are Englishspeaking and white; there are no Mexican or Asian residents in the town. The history of San Ramon can be traced back to 1887 when John W. Dixon founded the railway stop here on the Santa Clara River named for his father-in-law, General Manuel Saenz de la Vega y Gamboa. At first, Dixon only served as stationmaster at this location; he later acquired land adjacent to today's town and built a house there which he called "Dixon House". In 1919, when San Ramon became an incorporated city under state law (following passage of legislation allowing cities to exist without local government), Dixon sold his property within present day town limits to City Manager Harry Amedee for $1 per acre (the equivalent value at that time). That same year saw another milestone in san ramon's history - its incorporation into what was then known as Northern California County - making it one of nine original counties in Alameda County (now Bay Area). Throughout much of its early years as a village located along partridge Creek between Almaheim Road and Donner Pass Road (later renamed Highway 101), few people knew about or cared about what happened near their home - until World War II came along and changed all that! during World War II, thousands came through these areas looking for work opportunities; most importantly those who worked on military bases throughout Northern California due to their wartime need for men and materials needed to rebuild postwar America After hostilities ended however approximately 80%+of those employed within our area returned home or moved away permanently--a statistic which still leaves many questions today about why some voluntarily chose not to stay after such an intense conflict?
