The name comes from the Rancho San Pablo de los Cucamonga Indian tribe. In 1812, Mexico ceded California to the United States and established Mission San Francisco de Asís as its first Catholic mission. In 1836, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna issued an order that all Native American residents of California be removed within 10 days or face execution. Many of these people were forced into relocation camps near Monterey Bay. When it became known that many people had deserted their relocation centers, Santa Ana ordered more executions, this time against Native Americans living in the area around Monterey Peninsula. This event is known as the Monterey Massacre. Aftermath of the massacre: over 50 people died and 350 were deported back to Mexico Many natives who had been living in California when Mexican soldiers invaded found themselves unable to return due to persecution at home and food shortages caused by war with Mexico. Those who could not leave took up arms against their new conquerors and fought until they were defeated by Ulysses S Grant’s army at Palo Alto on April 9th1847
