The oldest European settlement in what is now Contra Costa County was founded by Spanish traders on May 8, 1776 near modern-day Petaluma. The area that would become San Ramon was part of Rancho La Brea, named for Alcalde Don Manuel de la Brea who sold it to Juan Bautista Alvarado on January 14, 1821. A post office called San Rafael was established at this location on November 15, 1836; it changed its name to San Ramon on February 12th of that year. In 1851, a group of Englishmen from Richmond built a winery known as Ritchie's Vineyard & Cider Company on land they had purchased from Mission Santa Clara de Asís. In 1862–1863, during the American Civil War (1861–1865), Ulysses S Grant visited this area and noted "an extensive vineyard" while visiting El Sobrante Island off shore—the first time he had ever seen wine production taking place in California. On July 22nd 1865 an act authorized conversions of several large parcels of Rancho La Brea into City limits; these areas lay within present-day San Ramon hills east and west of Town square (now Pacific Avenue). On August 9th 1870 voters elected JAMES MCDONALD as Mayor over WILLIAM HUGHES with 50% turnout without any major action being taken until December 15th when McDonalds ran for reelection unopposed after being indicted for bribery charges related to his previous mayoral term The early 20th century saw growth opportunities as industries such as shipbuilding boomed thanks to new docks built at Stockton Bayou during World War I and Prohibition beganin 1933 Maltese immigrants started arriving around 1920s to work at mills run by SMECCO which became Anheuser Busch Wholesale Corporation . They brought their Maltese culture with them when they moved here and many still live here today Many restaurants opened up around this time like Mrs Fuzzy Wuzzy's Tavern , Ace Chinese restaurant etc
