On October 1, 1945,San Rafael's mayor William Eaton announced that all businesses within its limits would be closed until further notice due to an abundance of munitions storage being located just outside town limits at Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station (now Marine Corps Air Station Miramar). Most businesses reopened on October 15 following a public outcry against this unprecedented blackout measure. On July 17, 1951 – two days after Senator John F Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas – Mayor Eaton announced that all services within his boundaries would be suspended because of "a necessary inventory" at Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station (now Marine Corps Air Station Miramar). This order represented a turning point in San Rafaels history as it signified America's involvement in Cold War tensions with Soviet Union. Services resumed on July 21 following a MOD decision to increase munitions stockpiles at Miramar instead of moving them closer to military installations in Southern California pursuant to President Harry S Truman'satomic energy directive
San Rafael is a small city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 25,491 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Americans who moved from San Francisco in 1849. The name "San Rafael" means "holy place." The current town of San Rafael was established in 1868 on the site of what is now the Naval Air Station Topaz and Marine Corps Base. The first post office opened in 1870, and the first school was built in 1872. A sawmill and millrace were built soon afterwards; the town became increasingly populated as agriculture became more important. In 1898, an electric railway line arrived to connect San Rafael with Marin County's other towns and villages; this helped to spur economic development. The last major industry to leave San Rafael was manufacturing until after World War II when many new housing developments began sprouting up throughout Marin County. Today, San Rafael retains a strong sense of community identity which has contributed to its nickname of "the most friendly city in America." There are numerous cultural events each year including art exhibitions, music festivals and poetry readings that bring people together for centuries-old traditions like potlatch (a ceremonial feast), farmers' markets and BBQs on summer days. The town of San Rafael was founded in 1876, named after General James P. Richardson who fought in the Mexican-American War.
