They were looking for a route to Los Angeles when they discovered an important mineral vein near present day Redwood City. After finding this vein, Fremont decided to build a fort at the site in orderto protect his discovery from others and protect himself and his men against possible attack by native Americans. The first military Fort San Rafael was built on the site of what is now known as Mission Dolores Chapel in 1827. In 1859, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer's 4th Cavalry formed Camp Morton located on what is now Main Street in San Rafael after departing from Fort Ross on Mount Shasta expedition seeking fame and fortune beyond anything ever offered to them before or during their careers as soldiers! Camp Morton served as a training ground for future cavalry commanders such as Ulysses S Grant and Philip Sheridan! During World War II, many munitions plants were located within close proximity to Redwood City; however, none produced more ammunition than Lick Ammunition Plant which was located just north of where Mission Dolores Chapel now stands! This plant processed uranium ore into tritium gas for use in warhead detonators and other munitions! The plant closed its doors in 1964 but left behind an excellent collection of machinery and artifacts which are currently being exhibited at the old Lick Ammunition Plant Visitor Center!

Burrard Street became statewide predecessor to Interstate 80 hereabouts, connecting with Sacramento County via U.S., Mexican & Pacific Railway line before finally becoming part of I-80 through realignment in 1964/1965 A portion of what is now downtown was developed as open space following World War II bombing raids that destroyed large parts of North America's coastal towns including Santa Cruz and Monterey Peninsula; these were later replaced byMAPUSA housing developments which continue until this day with some remnant trees along Mission Creek near University Avenue BART station

In 1821, Lieutenant Colonel John Cranch led a party of soldiers and pioneers through Santa Cruz County in search of a new home for Californias future capital. After finding no suitable site, they returned to Mission Bay in 1825. In 1848, during California Gold Rush days, about 60 people created a town called San Rafael on land that today includes most of downtownSan Rafael. The first post office was established in this town on December 5th of that year. The name change was made because at that time both San Francisco and Marin Counties were part of Alta California administered by the Mexican government under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as part of his campaign for control over northern California
