In the early 1900s, San Rafael was a small town with few businesses. However, it soon became known for its optical products. In 1903, two gentlemen named John and Maurice Llewellyn founded the company Llewellyn & Sons Optical Instrument Company. The business quickly grew and by 1907, they had joined forces with another entrepreneur named Arthur Whitney to form Whitney Manufacturing Company. The company produced a wide range of optical products, including telescopes, microscope slides, microscopes and binoculars. However, during World War I the company lost many of its customers due to the warring nations' efforts. After the war ended in 1919, Llewellyn & Sons Optical Instrument Company went bankrupt. However, John Llewellyn continued to operate his business as an independent firm until his death in 1933. Maurice Llewellyn took over the business from his brother and continued to produce high-quality optical products until his own death in 1969. During their time as producers of optic products at San Rafael, both men were highly respected within the industry for their ingenuity and creativity.

Today it is known as 'Redwood Valley Middle School' and has been home to many local government offices over the years including Police Department Headquarters (1901), Fire Department Headquarters (1992), Water Resources Agency Headquarters (1999-2002), and most recently Homeland Security Investigations headquarters (2008).

San Rafael is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 492. The name "San Rafael" is Spanish for ("at the foot of the mountain"). The first settlement in what is now San Rafael was called Santa Clara de las Campanas (St. Clare's Hill). In 1849, part of Rancho Rinconada became San Francisco and in 1853, piece of Rancho Monterey passed from Mexican hands to American ownership. In 1866, when Marin County was created, San Rafael became part of it and its post office continued to be open under that name until it closed on March 15th, 1969. The property that would become San Rafael Ridge was first patented by Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1776. During Mexican rule this land had been used for agriculture and grazing but later became known as ranchos alrededor del río Napa. When California won independence from Mexico in1848, parts of Napa Valley were included within U.S. territory including what are now Contra Costa and Marin Counties In 1850 during the Gold Rush many people made their way to Northern California looking for gold prospecting opportunities It wasn't until 1865 when Captain James Fenton founded an adobe mission at Point Reyes Station which served as a base camp for exploring the area In 1870 John Stinson discovered silver at El Sobrante Creek within walking distance of Point Reyes Station After years of development there were only around 100 residents living here by 1880 During World War I General Electric built a plant near town which employed up to 1000 people A civic committee led by Mayor Harry Laughlin formed in 1924 to improve infrastructure such as paving streets and building a water system On July 14th 1929 local resident Arturo Gutierrez organized a peaceful march against racism which resulted in seven arrests
In 1847, the first permanent Mexican settlers in San Rafael were organized as the Mission Santa Clara. The town was founded on a small rancho (farm) near what is now Dona Ana Street and Larkin Boulevard. In 1850, three Catholic priests, Father José de la Cruz y Arellano, Father Francisco Ascencio, and Father Pedro Avenel traveled to San Rafael to found the new mission. On July 10 of that year they laid the cornerstone of the church which still stands today. The town became an important stop on Highway 19 for travelers heading north to Madera County and south to Monterey County. The arrival of railroads in the 1860s allowed for more commerce and growth in San Rafael. The population reached 100 by 1870 but rapidly increased due to waves of immigrants coming during that decade including Irish, Germans, Italians, Poles, Chinese (known as "Nipmucs"), Portuguese people from Brazil and others. By 1910 there were over 1,000 residents in San Rafael with a strong Italian-American community. During World War II many families chose to relocation in Northern California because of wartime shortages of food and housing. Many people from San Rafael also worked in industries such as munitions plants or agriculture throughout the war years; however most residents returned home after hostilities ended. The post-war years saw continued growth at a rate unmatched by any previous period; by 1970 there were more than 2,000 residents inSanRafaelandthe pace had picked up again only modestly since then until recently when it has slowed considerably due largely to economic development elsewhere within our city limits
