After being designated as part of Marin County for local government purposes in 1909, San Rafael became one of its most populous municipalities. Its citizens have enthusiastically embraced advances made within both Marin County and statewide since then including becoming home to several major technology companies like Yahoo! Inc., Apple Inc., Googleplex and Facebook Inc. Today's residents are proud local citizens who contribute greatly to their larger community through volunteerism, arts & culture, education and economic development. Some highlights include: - Construction of BART station just across the street from town hall starting in 1978; - Growth of wine production with vineyards concentrated along Highway 1 south of town; - Expansive open space adjacent to downtown which has been used for hiking, biking and picnicking; - Significant housing developments throughout downtown (including multiple high-rise buildings), many with attached parks giving residents easy access to public transportation

San Rafael is a small city in Marin County, California, situated on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The population was 17,521 at the 2010 census. Its ZIP code is 94901. The first Europeans to visit what is now Marin County were Franciscans who founded missions in 1824 and 1825 in what is now Sausalito. Mission San Rafael became an Episcopal mission on November 29, 1836 and was named for St. Raphael of Gaza, a 12th-century Italian missionary who also served as pastor at Monterey Mission near modern-day Monterey Peninsula. In 1865, the United States acquired part of Alameda County from Spain via the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and renamed it Marin County in honor of President Abraham Lincoln's deceased maternal great-uncle John Sutter (1811–1872). The City of Sausalito was incorporated as a town on December 14, 1876 by order of Gov. Hiram Johnson with full city rights granted by Governor Goodwin Knight later that year. The population reached 509 when incorporation ended six years later; however, growth slowed during World War II because so many jobs were wartime black market sales munitions factories located outside the city limits. On July 15, 1958 – one week after Mercury Records founder Phil Spector died – San Rafael residents voted 2 ∶ 1 to annex parts of neighboring Redwood City into their community under the name "Redwood City–Sausalito." At that time there were over 1 million people living within commuting distance of each other in Northern California cities like Palo Alto and Redwood City alone; however "Redwood City–Sausalito" only had a population density of about 14 people per square mile compared to more than 300 people per square mile in both Palo Alto and Redwood City combined according to 2000 census figures! In light of this low residency rate and growing suburbanization around them (and resulting loss or truncation offshoring/export businesses), Mayor Bob Filner led an effort to have "Redwood City–Sausalit
The town of San Rafael was founded in 1795 by Captain Gabriel Moraga, who named it after his father and local landowner, San Ramon. The first post office was established in 1820. In 1853, the town became a city with its own government. In 1906 the city incorporated as a result of the state's entry into World War I and lost its independence. On July 1, 1911, San Rafael joined the City of Berkeley as part of a larger metropolitan area that included Oakland and other cities in Northern California. The city charter was amended in 1951 to make it an unincorporated community within Berkeley Township.
