As part of post-war reconstruction efforts, new housing developments sprang up throughout downtown; however, this gentrification eventually caused many longtime residents to move out or leave for better opportunities elsewhere in town. On October 5th 1960 Mayor Don Anderson announced plans for construction of Interstate 580 through downtownSanRafa – one of America’s first “expressways” – boosting growth rates throughout San Francisco County as well as adjacent counties for over 50 years thereafter (and still making an impact today). Between 1970-1975 major redevelopment took place spearheaded by then-Mayor Amos Alonzo Stagg; this included demolition or renovation of numerous historic buildings including City Hall Annex (1924), Masonic Temple (1893), Fillmore Hotel (1910), Civic Center Annex (1920) and more… resulting in a revitalized downtown which today offers visitors unique shopping experiences along with world-renowned cultural attractions like The Museum Of Modern Art

The mission of San Rafael was founded on July 20, 1821 by Father José Joaquín de Urbina and brother Miguel de la Cueva. It was the largest mission in California at the time and it is still a religious center today. In 1847, Mexico gained independence from Spain and the Californios (the original Mexican settlers) decided to name their new state of California after Don Pedro Francisco de Vallejo y Ramos, captain general of Mexico's army who had helped conquer California in 1846.
