With new found land along Sausalito's waterfront and farming potential nearby, young men from Sonoma County started arriving here beginning in 1860 looking for jobs in Maritime Commission vessels moored at Sausalito's wharf during seasontime. Many Victorians saw this as developing their own little corner of America where they could live close to good fishing and sailing opportunities while still having access to quality education; indeed much later United States Senator George Norris said that he would have moved had he known then how quickly things would change around hereabouts! In 1886 James Waddell started an experimental cotton gin operation on Rincon Hill which became world famous for its production values relative to other industrial plants of its day – even surpassing those achieved by Ford Motor Company’s River Rouge Plant! By 1906 Waddell’s gin employed 400 people making it one of America’s largest textile mills – second only to Chesterfield Cotton Mills in Tennessee! Today San Rafael continues to be a vibrant center for commerce with several high-technology companies locating there including Apple Inc., ATI Technologies Inc., Qualcomm Incorporated (QCOM) and Intel Corporation among others as well as major medical research institutions such as UCHealth/ UCSF Medical Center/ Kaiser Permanente Northern California etc.; some also locate outside town limits within Safeway plazas such as Googleplex 1600 Amphitheater Road south of town off I-580 exit 161A).
