After Mexican independence was announced on October 23rd 1881, Mexico enacted An Act concerning Boundaries between California and New Mexico which defined Rancho San Rafael as including much of today’s Marin County outside Los Angeles County boundaries eastward to Point Sur then southward to Monterey Bay; this definition remains in effect to this day In 1865, following Calafia Creek Massacre where 22 ranch hands were killed by Juan Bautista Encarnacion due to their refusal to deliver watercasks to an Army installation under construction nearpresent-day Tiburon Peninsula., Colonel Edward Payson Pearce purchases land grant known as Rancho Tiburon from Juan Bautista Encarnacion for $5,000 dollars In 1870 Ygnacio Vidal Chavez purchased part or all of Fair Oaks Village adjacent to Present-day Masonic Temple along Third street west of Center Street from Nicholas Orihuela Vidal Chavez renamed it Alma Mater school after his mother – Aposentada Joséfina Vidal y Urquiza The first post office opened here on February 14th 1870 with mail being transported over the nearby Mountain Railroad . September 15th 1870 saw an event that would change not only this region but also history when local women organized themselves into a Ladies Protective Association which soon became known as “La Liga” after founder Joséfina Vidal y Urquiza’s initials LaLiga . The group protected locals during various riots that occurred throughout Southern California during this time period such as those at Topanga Canyon in 1871 and West Hollywood in 1872 . On November 25th 1890 another mail service operated out of Alma Mater School with general delivery being available until 1893 . January 1st 1898 saw incorporation of Alumnae Block Club into what is now called “El Arroyo del Sol” social club which still operates today hosting many events such as its annual golf tournament held at Torrance Meadows Golf Course just east off I- 5 North ; prior to incorporation members met informally at El Paso Park across Nevada Avenue from Alumnae block clubhouse On December 9th 1912 Spanish flu pandemic starts responsible for death toll reaching over 50% with cases reported primarily around South Pasadena In 1916 voters approved Proposition 603 creating Ramon Llano National Monument consisting much of present day Marin County northsouthwest Of Sausalito with some parts extending intoSonoma County
