The business thrived for many years until 1875 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1903, the town of San Rafael incorporation was founded and soon after, the barrelworks became part of the new town’s municipal arsenal. The Municipal Arsenal continued to function as an armory until 1976 when it closed its doors due to budgetary reasons. Since then, there have been attempts by various organizations to reopen the Municipal Arsenal but no success has been achieved so far. It is interesting to note that despite all these failed efforts, some remnants of the old Municipal Arsenal still remain today including a few barrels from the 1854-1875 period.

The first postmaster general of California served at this station from 1853 until his death in 1861. In 1876–1881 Cotter constructed a line from Novato to Brisbane Naval Shipyard at Point Reyes Station using horses and mules pulled by small boats over rough water on an old sea bed that had been mined for gold since 1851. This led to increased traffic across the Sonoma Strait and made possible coastal shipping with large cargoes coming ashore between Novato and Sausalito

In 1865, San Rafael became a town. The population of the city increased to over 100 residents by 1880, and it grew to over 500 residents by 1890. The City Council adopted a charter for San Rafael on January 1, 1903. On April 15, 1906, the City Council passed an ordinance creating Park District #1 which included lands east of Woburn Street between First and Second streets as well as portions of Third Street between First and Second Streets. In 1916, Park District #2 was created including land west of Woburn Street between Second and Third streets as well as portions of Fourth Street between First and Second Streets. On October 3rd, 1933 Mayor James Ehrlich announced that San Rafael would become part of Berkeley County effective November 1st due to its location on the University Campus providing easy access to transportation into Berkeley
