San Rafael is a small town in Marin County, California on the north-central coast of the United States. It is located about 15 miles east of San Francisco and about 20 miles south of Petaluma. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit San Rafael were Spanish missionaries who built Mission Santa Cruz de la Mariposa in 1795. There they met people from the nearby village of Point Reyes Station and began their missionary work. In 1821, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the construction of a new mission,Mission Concepción del Norte, across from present-day Hearst Castle. When Mexico became an American country in 1848, most of California went to America as part of that nation's split into two parts: Alta California (the North) and Baja California (the South). In 1851, John Cranch moved to San Rafael with his family from Monterey Bay and started a small tannery near what is now High Street. He became one of early leaders in this newly founded community. Rancho San Rafael was granted to him by Maria Cristina De Anza y Valdés on October 14th, 1852. The grant included land for 2 square leagues (14 acres), including present-day downtown San Rafael and much of today's eastern side along Fourth Street between Masonic Avenue and Russian Hill Road

However, this trend would eventually end due to firearm manufacturing concerns which lead to production stoppages during World Wars I and II leaving manufacturers unable produce new firearms apparel desired by consumers. The town of San Rafael, California was founded in 1853 by Captain John B. Alvarado and his wife, Maria Elena. In 1875, San Rafael became part of Mexico City and lost its autonomy as a separate municipality. However, it retained its name and status as a small community within Mexico City until 1912 when it again regained its independence as an unincorporated community within San Francisco County. San Rafael is home to many notable buildings and landmarks dating back to its early days including the Alvarado Adobe House built in 1853 which is still used as a residence today and various churches including Sts. Ignatius (1873) and José Joaquin De Soto (1894). Additionally, several major roadways such as Highway 101 (the old Mexican Road), Highway 2 (the present day State Route 24), and Interstate 897 cross through or near the town center making it an important transportation hub for the area.
The first people to live in San Rafael were the Ohlone, who arrived in the early 1800s. In 1853, a group of Englishmen founded what is now known as The University of California at Berkeley. The town's first store was built in 1857. San Rafael grew slowly until the late 1800s when its population exploded due to new land grants and railroad construction. By 1900, there were over 100 businesses in town and about 400 residents. During World War II, San Rafael became a wartime munitions plant and produced munitions for the Pacific Theater. After the war, it slowly began to decline until its population fell below 200 individuals by 1970. However, through growth and redevelopment efforts, San Rafael has regained much of its former prosperity since then. Today, San Rafael is a thriving community with a diverse economy that includes technology companies such as Google and Facebook, real estate firms such as Villa Park Homes and Estancia Development Company, as well as small businesses across multiple sectors including manufacturing and agriculture
