In 1852, Don Pedro Cañon made an agreement with ranch hand Manuel Nieto which designated Rancho San Pablo east of town as part of Cañon's holdings in Marin County. In 1861, Mexican land grantee Antonio Romero sold parcels including what is now downtown San Rafael to American Major Wm. Halsey Cooke under the provisions that no development could be approved without his written consent and he would have first right to purchase any property within 500 feet (150 m) of U.S.-ownedReal Estate Savings Bank building on Church Street between Second and Third Streets where he had built a large home known as "El Muelle". In 1872 A & P Land Company filed an application for incorporation with five merchants listed as officers: JnoWm Lundgren (President), GeoFridtjof Nansen (Vice President), ChasMoses Sargent (Secretary), and Amasa Walker (Treasurer). On January 4th 1870 A & P Land Company became incorporated with twelve incorporators including GEOFRED TUCKER, SAMUEL MORGAN JR., JOHN PALMER JR., WM FOSTER FRANKLIN Jr., BENJAMIN DAYTON JR., THOMAS CAMDENJR., ROBERT BROWNING JR., SARAH LEE DAVIS and JOSEPH STEVENS. On October 6th 1870 An Act Relative To Municipal Affairs was passed by the State of California providing for municipal elections on November 3rd each year with a Mayor and three Councilors elected at-large while also creating Marshal Courtrooms which were used to hear criminal cases arising out of or connected with real estate transactions conducted in or outside the limits of said municipal district or any other subdivision or portions thereof formely granted by virtue thereof; This act being repealed by an act entitled An Act relative thereto passed February 10th 1895 chaptered An Act Relative To Municipal Elections And Byordained September 8th 1897 whereby all Marshal Courtrooms were abolished and all proceedings therein discontinued... Aldermen John Fenton (1st Ward), John Daly (2nd Ward), Emanuel Peña(3rd Ward), Frank Erlichman(4th Ward)and Horatio Alger Sr.(5th Ward)were elected at-large on November 3rd 1870 while James Rolph served as Mayor pro tempore until December 12th when his election was overturned because he failed to file papers certifying his candidacy within sixty days after being given notice thereof... On December 12th 1880 Wm Halsey Cooke was elected Mayor pro tempore.. The first female elector ever registered in California tried her luck voting for members of the Board Of Supervisors but she received only 1% statewide... After Mr. Cooke's term expired on May 15 1891 City Councilor Mrs Clara Gonzalez took office under the new Constitution... On November 5 1923 voters defeated proposition No 2 authorizing annexation into Marin County bySan Francisco... In 1934 Voters rejected proposition No 17 authorizing annexation into Marin County byOakland In 1935 referendum question #2 asking whether residents desire annexation into Marin county were placed on the ballot along with measure No 10 authorizing certain changes concerning zoning ordinances enacted since last year’s referenda relating thereto; Measure No 10 passing resulting in Oakland annexing part if not all of San Rafael proper although most residential areas still remain unannexed

The first post office was established in 1850, and soon San Rafael became known for its flourishing fruit industry. By 1865, however, citrus production had dwindled due to improved transportation methods and competition from oranges grown in Southern California. But even though citrus farming failed during the late 1800s and early 1900s, San Rafael's history is still well remembered today because of its many important moments in American history. For example, during World War II San Rafael played an important role as an Army Airfield where planes flew missions over North Africa and Europe. Today there areMany small businesses that continue to run based on traditions such as Hope Festival which takes place every year on October 10th and features local food stalls along with live music throughout town square
The city of San Rafael was founded in 1849 by John Day and his wife, Mary. The original site of the town was on a small stream called Pacheco Creek. In 1853, the U.S. General Order No. 9 ordered military posts be established along the southern coast of California to protect American settlers from Mexican forces. The order included San Rafael as one of the posts. In 1865, San Rafael became part of the newly created Rancho El Monte Union because it had been granted to Manuel Nieto by Governor Edmund Sanger. The land that now makes up San Rafael was purchased from Nieto in 1896 for $10,000 by various members of Congress who were looking for a new location for their country's capital after Sacramento became too populous and expensive to maintain. A group led by Mayor George Beall developed plans for a large civic center and waterworks at what is now downtown San Rafael and began construction in 1898-99 (the first public works project in San Rafael). The city hall building is also Older than any other building in downtown San Francisco! On April 25th 1915 during World War I, an ammunition dump on present day Doheny Avenue near Highway 16 exploded; resulting in over 100 casualties including 13 Americans dead and 30 wounded at what is still considered one of America’s worst peacetime disasters (at least until 9/11).
