San Rafael, California is a census-designated place in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first European to visit what is now San Rafael was Juan Bautista de Anza on October 20, 1769. He named it after his home town of Valladolid in northern Spain. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded by Franciscan priests in 1821 and completed in 1825. A post office called Rancho Rinconada was established in 1826 and remained in operation until 1901. In 1849 the Mexican government granted land to American citizens for a cattle drive from Sacramento through Sonoma County to winter near Fort Ross on Mount Tamalpais (now north of Petaluma). This set off a years-long conflict over who would get the grant and who would build roads and houses on it. The Americans built homes and opened a school before Mexico regained control of the land in 1850. In 1906, Measure I of will create Marin County was passed by voters with 61% support; it contained parts of Marin as well as Contra Costa County (northwest of downtown), but its main focus were rural areas east of Highway 1 close to San Francisco Bay outside Santa Rosa and Sausalito counties. On July 14, 1907 when San Rafael annexed Rancho Rinconada from Marin county, most residents voted not to ratify the annexation because they felt that there should have been more discussion about what type of government should be established within the new county before it went into effect.. However annexation did go into effect without any protests or further debate as legal papers were filed with Registrar-General’s office just days later on July 27th.. The first postmaster general for Marin County was Wm H Carruth who served from 1907-1910 & 1911-1920& 1921-1922 John Fenton who served from 1923-1930 & 1931–1934 & 1935–1936 George A Sweeny As early as 1879 an attempt had been made by some local people to found their own community away from then known as "the bay" - this group saw opportunity where others saw only danger or disadvantage thru lack thereof access to water or other resources necessary for life including timber (). By 1886 there were already plans for an independent village called Walnut Creek being located at a point near modern day Tiburon () due to increased traffic along Raccoon Road which connected Guerneville with Point Reyes Station
