On April 14, 1865, during the American Civil War, General Fremont attacked San Pablo with an infantry force supported by artillery under Colonel George Armstrong Custer while occupying Oakland Naval Shipyard at Jack London Square; this attack resulted in the death of 34 men including 22 Californians and six United States Marines on board USS " Porter" (1864) and USS " Wasp" (1865). On May 12th 1865 Captain John Sutter's party from USS Sacramento arrived off shore to rescue the survivors of Fremont's army after he had sunkUSS " Porter" with his cannonball-fired gunsboat HMS " Northumberland". A victory parade was held that day which honored General Fremont and Ulysses S Grant who were also present. This event is commemorated by a statue in downtown Oakland depicting Commodore John Doolittle leading a squadron ashore to destroyUSS Texas (1895) caused by Confederate Privateer Missouri off Point Conception near Martinez Naval Base
