When the first Europeans arrived in California in 1769, they were met with hostility and violence from the Native Americans. The area that is now San Pablo was part of the Rancho San Pablo Mexican land grant given to Juan Manuel de Alcalá by Governor Jose Antonio Moraga in 1821. In 1835, following a campaign by General José Joaquin Miller y Costilla, Mexican citizens revolted against Mexico's rule and formed the Republic of Californias. On December 20, 1849, Don Miguel de la Torre granted a Rancho Santa Clara to John Sutter for $2 million. The town of San Pablo was founded on December 26th of that year by Sutter and his workers. At its peak population in 1850, San Pablo had 300 residents. During World War II, San Pablo played an important role as a military base for both the United States and Japan. After the war ended,San Pablo slowly began to decline as a residential community due to suburban development and economic problems. However, it has since regained some its former importance as a commercial center for wine production and other agricultural activities.

After the war, many businesses moved to San Francisco while others developed around government jobs that continued until about 1970 when automation began making some production roles obsolete and men were no longer needed at those places such as health care or local newspapers which left many businesses unprofitable and facing closure or displacement within years due to changes wrought in technology without corresponding job growth

In 1848, the Mexican government granted American settlers the right to purchase land in San Pablo Creek Valley. In 1851, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered US soldiers to fire on a group of peaceful protesters, who were taking water from the creek. The event became known as the Battle of San Pablo. This action led to Spain and Mexico agreeing to peace negotiations and ended the Alamo War. The town of San Pablo was founded by Captain José Maria Sanchez in 1847 as a small trading post on the banks of San Pablo Creek. After several years, Sanchez moved his business upstream and built a log cabin near what is now Cathedral Park. The first store was opened in 1850 by Isaac Segarra, who named it "Granada". A post office was established at San Pablo in 1852; it remained open until 1893. In 1862, three men – James Hogg, Daniel Webster and Edward Everett – volunteered for service with General Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War because they felt that California should be free within their own borders rather than follow Great Britain. They arrived at Fort Point on December 12 and skirmished with Confederate forces before retreating back to America on December 17th after only two days' combatting
The first people to live in San Pablo were the Ohlone Native Americans. They lived on the Peninsula for about 10,000 years before moving farther downriver. In 1821, Spanish traders discovered and landed on the Peninsula, and by 1830 there were over a hundred colonists living in San Pablo. The town was named after General Antonio Vallejo, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town was founded on an artificial island that was created by filling up a river with earth and stones. The town gradually grew because of its location and its ability to trade with other settlements downstream.
