The history of San Pablo begins with the Spanish settlement of Alta California in 16 Notch Valley in 1769. The first permanent population was established by Juan Bautista de Anza, who arrived on July 20, 1771. The name "San Pablo" is thought to be derived from the Nahuatl word "xalan", meaning "place of beans." In 1821, Mexico ceded California to the United States and San Pablo was included within the newly formed Mexican state of Alta California. The town's first store was opened by Manuel Nieto in 1823. Mining began at San Pablo Creek in 1829 and soon local residents were earning a good living from mining operations and other businesses. By 1850, there were over 100 businesses operating in San Pablo. A school was built for children in 1852 and later became a day care center for adults. A post office was founded in 1860 and served the town until 1893 when it moved to Monterey. The first church built in San Pablo was dedicated on October 24, 1865 by Rev. J M Price as Saint John's Episcopal Church. In 1906, San Pablo experienced its worst fire ever with over 50 percent of the town destroyed including most of the schoolhouse which still stands today. It took more than three years for firefighters to completely rebuild the town following that event which left many buildings uninsured and without insurance coverage during that time period such as hospitals or churches which also suffered damage from the firestorming along with homes valued at millions of dollars lost). There have been some major changes throughout its history both positive (such as becoming one of the wealthiest communities in California) but also negative (such as experiencing several fires). Some key events that have impacted this community include: -the 1906 earthquake which damaged much of downtownSAN PABLO; -the 1987 Monterey County earthquake which damaging many homes; -the 2000 Loma Prieta Earthquake which struck just east of downtown killing nine people; -the 2005 Northridge Earthquake which devastated much housing within a few miles outsideof downtown SAN PABLO
The San Pablo River was first named by Spanish explorers in 1542 as the Río de la Plata. The name was changed to its current form in 1821 when gold was discovered at the mouth of the river.
