San Pablo is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 7,822 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula, about 25 miles east of downtown San Francisco. The name "San Pablo" means "happy place." The first Europeans to visit what is now San Pablo were Portuguese sailors sailing from China in 1542. They named it Laguna de la Selva (Lake of the Woods). In 1821, Mexican land grantee Vicente de Anza established a rancho (ranch) here and called it Rancho San Pablo. In 1846, American Commodore Matthew Perry landed at Alcatraz Island off Point Reyes National Seashore and claimed part of California for the United States. A group of Californios under General José Joaquin Monterey traveled to meet Perry and proclaimed their independence from Mexico. On July 8th, 1846, they proclamed themselves the Republic of California and adopted the flag of that republic as their own: a red field with white letter S above a blue stripe. In 1861, during America's Civil War, General Winfield Scott ordered his command to march on Sacramento to capture all rebels south of Bear Hill Dam – including many women and children who were being held by Santa Clara County officials as hostages taken in order to buy food supplies for war efforts against Confederate forces north of Sacramento. At nightfall on November 14th/15th 1862 more than 1200+ Southern soldiers marched into town through streets full of houses ablaze with gunfire as they passed through; most everyone fled before dawn when Scott's troops arrived minutes later looking like ghosts! Inevitably some residents returned after the war while others did not until much later whenRevolutionaries took over much older towns such as Stockton which started packing up their homes in 1847 because there was no water or other resources available for them anymore without moving! After President Lincoln signed Executive Order 9984 on January 22nd 1863 making land grants subject only to whites only within certain limits prescribed by Congress specifically excludes any unenclosed areas now known collectively as “the East Bay Hills” remaining within Spanish Bayou district boundaries (referring especially to those areas east-northeastward extending from present day Hayward Boulevard near Alameda Avenue across Diablo Canyon Road into hills adjoining Amador County), most people living east-northeastward gradually vacated their homes due largely to lack thereof & scarcity thereof either dueños or nonresident aliens having purchased property adjacent thereto primarily thru purchase power generated thereby trough irrigation services rendered thereby improving agricultural condition etc.; however few if any chose finally & permanently move back home rather than endure pioneer period hardships endured prior thereto nor recently experienced again today excepting transient seasonal visitors

The mission was later renamed to honor General Antonio de Mendoza y Bejarano and Hidalgo County was created from parts of Alta California in 1849. The town of San Pablo grew up around the mission and surrounding villages. In 1853, the Mexican government granted Rancho San Pablo to José Nieto and his brother-in-law Francisco de Haro as a gift for their part in the resistance against Mexico's invasion of Alta California. The ranch passed through several hands before it came into the possession of James Waddell Calkins in 1909. Over time, many businesses were established inSan Pablo including Hardware Store No. 2 (now known as ABC store), Wagon Wheel Saloon and Cafe, Presbyterian Church (1893), School District No. 1 (1898), Bank of America Building (1909) and Tractor Company building now used as a daycare center. On July 4, 1969, during what is now known as United States independence day celebrations, an earthquake struck San Pablo with a magnitude 7.1 tremor that destroyed much of downtown including Wagon Wheel Saloon and Cafe; Bank of America Building; Presbyterian Church; School District No. 1; Tractor Company building; and most importantly Hardware Store No. 2 which collapsed resulting in at least 28 fatalities along with many more injuries or damage done to stores all over the city center! This devastating disaster left san Pablo reeling for months afterwards with little hope for reconstruction or revival until 1979 when EPCOT theme park opened located just across the street from San Pablo Army Depot which quickly began rehabilitation work on behalf of local businesses which have since thrived once again! At present there are numerous museums, restaurants, bars & clubs located throughout downtownSan Pablo such as La Bodega Museum Of California Art (opened in 1998), Pacific Coast Plaza Shopping Center(opened 2003), Amtrak Station - BART & Bus Stop(opened 2004), Donnybrook Park(opened 2006)and much more!
The city of San Pablo was founded in 1777 by Spanish missionaries, and became a part of the Mexican Republic in 1821. The City of San Pablo's first mayor was José Joaquín Herrera y Ulloa. In 1868, San Pablo joined the newly formed California Statehood movement, and on July 15, 1850, it became the 3rd city in California to be incorporated as a state. The City of San Pablo was still an unincorporated community until 1912 when it became part of the new city of Berkeley.
