San Pablo is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 5,508 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The town was founded in 1849 by Spanish Missionaries as part of the Rancho San Pablo Mexican land grant given to José Joaquin Moraga and his wife María de los Remedios Axelrod. The name "San Pablo" means "place where breadfruit trees grow." In 1872, the town became an incorporated settlement with a three-member board of trustees. In 1886 it became the seat of Contra Costa County when it was organized from parts of Marin and Sonoma counties. The local water supply comes from groundwater reserves left over from early days when there were no wells in this area. Today, a new well has been drilled and pumpaged into service since 2006 which supplies water for all residents free of charge. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of 2000, there were 4,926 people residing in San Pablo proper (which includes unincorporated areas), 3,569 households, and 1,395 families residing in its eastern portion: 498 households consisting only of individuals and 234 containing two or more individuals; 814 families consisting only of children under 18 years old; and 276 family dwellings that are not owner-occupied but are used by one or more roommates who share cooking and living expenses with their landlord/tenant friends/family members without actually being tenants or adhering to any lease agreement]. In spite of these difficulties, however, the people of San Pablo continue to make an important contribution to California history. They have helped build some of the most famous landmarks in our state – such as Civic Center Park in Berkeley and Golden Gate Bridge – as well as countless other places throughout the state. In addition, they have constantly fought for justice on behalf of their fellow citizens: They have fought against discrimination both during peacetime (such as when they protested against unfair labor practices) and during wartime (such as when they helped resist Japanese expansionism).
In 1847, the town of San Pablo was founded on the peninsula that now makes up downtown San Pablo. The first post office was established in 1850. In 1852, a mill was built on the site and started manufacturing flour, soap and other products. In 1863, the first school opened in San Pablo and soon became a popular stop for students traveling to Berkeley. In 1865, San Pablo became an official city and began to develop into a busy commercial center with several businesses lining Market Street. In 1872, California statehood was granted to California and San Pablo fell within its boundaries. That year saw the construction of the Pacific Railroad through town which made it easier for people to get around and added more commerce to the area. By 1890,San Pablo had reached its peak as a commercial center with several large buildings along Market Street including The State House (now part of City Hall),the Bank of America Building and numerous churches. However, during World War I tension between Oakland and San Francisco mounted resulting in military action at various locations throughout Northern California; most notably at Camp Upton near Hayward; this led to mass evacuations of Oakland workers from their homes in early 1916 until February 1917 when order was finally restored by General Pershing allowing them back home after they repel an attack by Mexican forces
