The city experienced significant growth during World War II due to its importance as a munitions plant; however, it slowly lost its status as an economic center after that war ended. However, recent economic development has seen renewed interest inSan Pablo; this include new developments such as mixed-use neighborhoods and a new downtown district that opened up in 2017. San Pablo is a city in Contra Costa County, California, on the shore of Golden Gate Sound. The population was 16,716 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city on the West Coast of North America and one of its oldest cities, founded by Spanish colonists in 1795. The name San Pablo comes from Mission San Pablo de Asís, which was founded in 1795 by Franciscan priests under Spanish rule. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Contra Costa County was made by Hernando de Soto on his ill-fated attempt to explore the Bay Area during his exploration of California in 1542. De Soto's party reached San Lorenzo Creek near present-day Walnut Creek before being forced back out by Native Americans and returning to their ships at Laguna Seca on July 25. In 1821 Mexican land grant Rancho Rinconada was given to Juan Bautista Alvarado for his cattle ranch west of Yuba City. In 1846, when California became a U.S. territory following Mexico's defeat at the Battle of Buena Vista, Alvarado sold part of his ranch including San Pablo to American settlers as part of an effort to gain access to market potentials beyond Sonoma County.. In 1860–1861 Jesse Latham surveyed and laid out portions of Contra Costa County on land grants from Mary Quantrill (the founder and first intendant) that would later become Hayward and Richmond counties; these lands were then divided among Latham's heirs according to their wealth or political influence within society (i.e., those with more influence went into Oracle Ridge). In 1865 Latham donated all but 5 acres (20 hectares) of his remaining land grant—including what is now downtown San Pablo—to the Methodist Episcopal Church for use as a parish center after it moved from nearby Dublin into downtown Oakland because Oakland lacked facilities suitable for worshiping God indoors. The church soon erected a wooden church building which still stands today adjacent to Point Reyes Station Boulevard across from BART Station.. An act passed March 21st 1915 granted voting rights municipally disenfranchised residents who had been living outside county limits since before 1850 When san francisco incorporated as a city it included parts If present day Contra Costa County annexed most parts If SF annexed 1928
