The first Europeans to come to the area were Missionaries who arrived in 1776. The town was named after San Francisco, which was founded by Spanish Missionaries in 1769. The town slowly grew and by 1852 it had a population of around 1,500 people. In 1881, the city of San Mateo became an independent municipality.
